West Bank: Palestinian man killed after Israeli boy goes missing (bbc.com)

Newsworthy event (Main event)

1. Eyewitnesses have described scenes of chaos as they fled a busy Sydney shopping mall where a knifeman killed six people and wounded several others..

2. Despite being a noir thriller, Netflix's Ripley brings new life to Italy's romanticised notion of la dolce vita. Here's how to experience it in the Amalfi Coast's sleepy villages.

3. A Palestinian man has been killed in the occupied West Bank and 25 are reported hurt after dozens of Jewish settlers stormed a village during an Israeli search for a missing teenager.

Background event (Elaboration)

1. The Westfield mall where the attack took place is a major shopping centre in the east of Sydney's central business district and close to the famous Bondi Beach. It is one of the biggest and most popular shopping centres in the country and like any other Saturday was packed with hundreds of people, including many families and young children. The area is home to a large proportion of Sydney's 40,000-strong Jewish community and Sydney's main synagogue, the Central, is only a short walk away. Horrified shoppers have described their shock as the attacks unfolded. Johnny, 33, who was visiting from the New South Wales Central Coast, said he heard a commotion while shopping and turned to see a woman and her baby being attacked. "She was getting stabbed. Everyone was in shock [and] didn't know what to do," he said. Nearby he thought he could make out another body on the ground, he said. The injured woman managed to make a run for the Tommy Hilfiger store and once inside, staff quickly locked the doors, he said. "Some of the other shoppers were using clothing and things to try and… stop the bleeding," he said. "The baby only had a minor wound, but the lady was pretty bad… there was a lot of blood and she was panicking," he added. "Hopefully she pulls through."

2. La dolce vita, or "the sweet life" – popularised by Federico Fellini's eponymous 1960 film – is the single phrase that sold Italy as a rainbow-coloured land where dreams are made.

3. Israeli troops intervened after dozens of settlers stormed al-Mughayyir armed with guns and stones. It is not yet clear whether the man who died, Jehad Abu Alia, 26, was shot by an armed settler or Israeli soldier. The Palestinian Red Crescent said live fire hit at least eight people. Missing Benjamin Ahimeir, 14, has not been found. A huge search is under way. Local media said the circumstances around the teenager's disappearance were still unknown and the military was not sure if the incident was terrorism-related. Troops have set up roadblocks in the area. Israeli media reported that Benjamin Achimeir had left "Gal Farm" in the settler outpost of Malachei Shalom early on Friday, and had not been seen since. He had been grazing sheep, and the sheep returned to the farm without him, police said. His sister Hannah, quoted by AFP news agency, said he was familiar with the area. Separately, Israeli forces shot and killed two West Bank Palestinians. One was confirmed by Hamas to be a local commander of the group. The Israeli military say Mohammed Daraghmeh was killed in a shoot-out with their troops.

Ukraine could face defeat in 2024. Here's how that might look (bbc.com)

Newsworthy event (Main event)

1. As a young man, Park Choong-Kwon helped build the nuclear missiles that his homeland, North Korea, blasted off from time to time to threaten the West..

2. The popularity of Haruki Murakami among many Indonesian readers who are fascinated by the novels of the award-winning Japanese writer.

3. The former commander of the UK's Joint Forces Command has warned that Ukraine could face defeat by Russia in 2024.

Background event (Elaboration)

1. When people migrate from authoritarian regimes to liberal democracies, they dream of a better life, of opportunities. A refugee becoming a lawmaker, or even one day president? It’s possible.  But for a North Korean, it’s extraordinary. Park, at age 37, is just the fourth escapee ever to become a parliamentarian in the South. “I came to South Korea with nothing,” he told the BBC earlier this week, “and now I’ve entered the political arena.  “I see all of this as the power of our liberal democracy and I think it’s all possible because our citizens made it happen. It is a miracle and a blessing .”For North Korean watchers, it's also a sign of progress.

2. Murakami’s book popularity spread around the world, especially in Indonesia where he has a strong fan base. According to the lecturer from Malang who read Murakami’s work said that Murakami stands out from other contemporary authors among literary enthusiasts because he influences pop culture. The popularity showed when Indonesian authors mentioned Murakami in their essays. He also stated that the 2000s was the time when English books were easier to access in major cities in Indonesia. The Indonesian public also knows Murakami because he has been nominated for literary honours for fiction.

3. But its forces are running critically low on ammunition, troops and air defences. Its much-heralded counter-offensive last year failed to dislodge the Russians from ground they had seized and now Moscow is gearing up for a summer offensive. So what will that look like and what are its likely strategic objectives? "The shape of the Russian offensive that's going to come is pretty clear," says Gen Barrons. "We are seeing Russia batter away at the front line, employing a five-to-one advantage in artillery, ammunition, and a surplus of people reinforced by the use of newish weapons."

Rainbow-like pattern found on planet outside solar system (bbc.com)

Newsworthy event (Main event)

1. When news broke of men at Westminster being targeted by flirtatious WhatsApp messages from mysterious figures calling themselves "Charlie" or "Abi" many assumed it was a classic honeytrap.

2. A family touring Scotland's North Coast 500 route are said to be "lucky to be alive" after their motorhome was blown down a hill by storm winds. Pictures show a scene of devastation after the rented vehicle rolled over several times - with the family of four and two dogs still inside.

3. Signs of mysterious rainbow-like patterns have been detected on a planet outside the solar system, astronomers have said. The phenomenon, named the glory effect, is often seen on Earth and has only been found once on another planet, Venus.

Background event (Elaboration)

1. It all began in Bournemouth Thought this was a story confined to the Conservative Party and William Wragg - the MP who ended his own career after admitting he had been "scared" into sharing colleagues' numbers with someone he met on a dating app? Think again. The honeytrapper - as we shall call him, her or them - first popped up on Saturday, 23 September last year in Bournemouth, the opening day of the Liberal Democrats' annual conference.

2. Police and mountain rescue teams attended and found them alive but with severe bruising. Peter Schmidt Wreckage of motorhome Peter Schmidt Luna motorhome hire was sent damage photos of the scene Peter Schmidt, owner of Luna motorhome hire, said he was shocked after receiving photos of the scene. Mr Schmidt said when the family contacted him to report the damage he had no idea how bad the accident was. "They were calling to say the van has been written off. I asked for photos and that was the point where my heart sank," he said. "The fact that everyone - the couple, the children and the dogs - are okay and come out alive is amazing "Everyone I've shared the photos with assumed they were dead. They're lucky to be alive."

3. This phenomenon is called the glory effect which is often seen on Earth and has only been found on Venus. When light diffracts and forms ring-link patterns, it passes through a narrow hole, similar to water droplets in clouds. The glory effect was discovered after a three-year planet watch by a tiny spacecraft named Cheops. Future research on the phenomenon may confirm its validity, which may further astronomers’ understanding of exoplanets and their potential habitability. The glory effect could be verified by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), according to scientists.

3.
Fallout TV show stars say show goes big on details (bbc.com)

Newsworthy event (Main event)

1. President Joe Biden has been urged to ban imports of Chinese-made electric cars to the US. The chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Sherrod Brown, wrote "Chinese electric vehicles are an existential threat to the American auto industry".

2. Taylor Swift's songs are back on TikTok following a dispute that led her label to stop licensing its content to the app.

3. Another TV show based on a video game has landed... and critics say it's great. Is the world ending? It certainly is in Fallout - the adaptation of the post-apocalyptic role-playing game currently earning rave reviews.

Background event (Elaboration)

1. In February, the White House said the US was opening an investigation into whether Chinese cars pose a national security risk. "We cannot allow China to bring its government-backed cheating to the American auto industry", Senator Brown said in a video on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Senator Brown, who is a Democrat from the the car-producing state of Ohio, is seeking to win a fourth term in office in November's election.

2. Her music's return on Thursday comes ahead of the release of her new album, The Tortured Poets Department. Universal Music pulled songs by its artists in January, including Rihanna and Ariana Grande, citing a licensing dispute. Many artists have complained about inadequate royalties from TikTok. While many of her songs - including You Belong With Me and Cruel Summer - are again available for users to add to their videos, music belonging to Universal's other artists has still not been relisted. That may be because unlike other artists, Swift owns the copyright to her music under the terms of a 2018 deal with Universal. Some reports speculated Swift reached a separate deal with TikTok. "Swifties" - Taylor Swift fans - took to the platform to share their delight at her music returning.

3. The series weaves together the stories of three characters striving to survive in a world ravaged by nuclear bombs. And BBC Newsbeat spoke to two of the actors behind them - Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten - to find out more. The Fallout games are set 200 years after a nuclear war leaves the Earth a wasteland, as players navigate the new world and the different factions that live within it.
